The Mag

Introducing: Varoslav

Varoslav is the Paris based, Czech born artist, DJ and producer who, together with Guy Gerber, has managed and A&Red the influential Supplemental Facts label for the past four years. This month, though, he launches a new project all his own, namely boutique label Rue de Plaissance.

With the help of his girlfriend, Varoslav aims to establish the imprint as an eclectic stable that releases everything from experimental house to funked-up techno across both digital and vinyl formats. For each release, special artwork will be created for the first 300 vinyl presses, as you would expect from a man of such musical and graphical vision.  We caught up with him for more...

Introduce yourself…
I’m Varoslav from Paris, I’m 30 years old, a label owner of Rue de Plaisance Records. Producer/DJ/party person and troublemaker, too.

How and when were you first infected by electronic / dance music?
In the late 90’s. I started to go out in clubs raves and festivals in France, Paris and Ibiza…I was a fashion kid with blue hair… ahaha

How and why did you get into DJing and producing?
Many people around me were djing…in 1999 my friends bought me my 1st turntables for my birthday…I was 20 years old. Everything started here…

I understood rather early that it will be easier for me to play if I produce my own music, this is what I tried - Myspace was crazy at this time and helped me to get some early support from good artists. It encouraged me to continue…

In  2007 my meeting with Guy Gerber took me to another step…I started to take care of Supplemental Facts records…I really starting DJ internationally this same year.

What are the most important things for you when making music?
The most important thing to me when I’m doing music is to be leaded by my emotions of the moment. I’m not trying to make music like somebody else as example …I just follow my instinct day by day with the influences around me. I try to translate it as music. It’s really good way to forget your daily problems, when you produce, you are somewhere else.

Same question when DJing... what are your goals?
My goal is to bring to people some new sounds and ideas of a party. When it’s a big party for sure I like when it is happy and screaming!

I like it when you can play the music you want. People have to discover some old and new stuff. For me there’s many faces of house music …so I have to be selective with the places I DJ, not for the money only but mostly for the vibe, the crow, the party. So I’m not playing everywhere and every week in my city by choice!

Who or what would you consider as your main influences?
Hip-hop, soul music definitely influences my music from now on. It’s also funny I think big oldie hits in French music like Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg or even the Compagnie Creole influences my mind in a way. The club music has also a big imprint in my music. As a label manager, I try to produce something special, I don’t want to stay fixed in only one kind of atmosphere.

What makes you, you?
Mmmm, not easy to talk about myself… My perspicacity to follow what I’m trusting in. My faithfulness to my friends and people I like. My envy to go to the maximum of things, always, dreams can be true!

Musically, what got you most excited recently?
The music and the creativity from the guys from Smallville Records, no doubt, they move their ass! They produce amazing music this time with new comers and other great producers involved there. The all project is nicely done. I support it 100%

Dial and Rush Hour takes a good place also in my favourite labels for their creative catalogue.
As artist, my good friend David K impressed me a lot with his new tracks. Stay tuned coz he’s really hot!

But the most exciting to me this time is my new label “Rue de Plaisance” launched last september.

What are you working on?
Lot of things!

My label “Rue de Plaisance” is my baby and take me a lot of time.
The next release 02 is mine included Chaim + Jef K & Gwen Maze’s remixes. I can tell you now that the 03 will host tracks that I made with David K and include a nice remixer but I'll keep it secret for the moment!

Alongside that I continue my vinyl only bootleg series, which have a real enthusiasm from the scene. I will stop it soon to keep it fresh. All good things come to an end…

I have also remixes coming soon for labels: Bloop - Bad Animals – Hummingbird - Apparel

Who are you outside of music?
I’m somebody really simple who like to eat good food and wine and spend time with people I like, with my family …

These days; music drives my life and I think it would be hard to get it out of my life…
