Move D & DJ W!ld in Leeds

Mono_Cult 3rd Birthday
Move D, DJ W!ld + residents
Wire, Leeds
13/03/2010

It’s now three years since the first Mono_Cult party, and what and adventure it’s been. Since initially starting out with gatherings at Leeds’ Lounge bar, the party-hungry crew then held regular events at The Faversham whilst, at the same time, they hosted a ton of back rooms everywhere from mUmU in Liverpool to T Bar in London. Tonight, though, they are the stars of their own show at new home Wire.

And, so matched is it to the vibe of a mono_cult party, we think it their best and most fitting home yet. The recently polished-up basement is like a French wine cellar – it’s all red brick walls, steel pillars supporting the low, brick-lined ceiling and is riddled with hidden alcoves. There’s a subtle, smoky air about the club, and that vibe is one which headliner Move D suits perfectly…

Coming on at 1am, the much respected German deep houser (deep in the true sense – none of that conga-flecked carnival shit) instantly takes things down after a nicely building warm up from one of the residents. Starting with steady house shuffles, the tempo is slow: the young mix of girls and boys all around us sway accordingly and as Move D breathes more life and percussive kick into the mix, more and more people join the dance floor from the dim nooks and low-lit bar on the fringes.

The minimal lighting of Wire is restricted to just one or two blue and red lasers which sweep the floor randomly – a strobe does flicker later in the night at more kinetic points, but the general darkness of the place makes your aural senses work that little bit harder, heightening the emotions being laid down by D in the process.

The midpoint of the German’s set simultaneously marks the high point: following a long and draw-out, heads-down silvery synth workout, the warm, uplifting sonics of Joy Orbison’s ubiquitous smash ‘Hyph Mngo’ bleed from the Funktion One sound system and the club erupts – dancers dance, skankers skank, and the brick ceiling which is just inches above us now seems miles away…

Come the end of Move D’s three hour set, he's had the time to work his way incrementally up to higher tempos and swifter tech cuts, leaving the room on 'simmer' ready for next guest and new Cocoon resident, DJ W!ld One or two technical glitches aside, W!ld shows himself to be just that by dropping everything from spliffed-out ragga to propulsive jams; from full on techno to some groove laden house. The extra energy W!ld pumps into the basement as he takes things through to 6am is well received by the still large amount of people who hustle on the dance floor (though, admittedly, shapes are much less slick than they were a few hours ago).

With bookings like these - and now settled in harmony as they at their new home – you sure as hell need to check out Mono_Cult.
